Julia Child’s Influence

Influence that extends beyond cooking shows and entertainment. She helped make international cuisine approachable for home cooks. Julia Child also encouraged people to experiment in the kitchen fearlessly. Julia believed cooking should be joyful, curious, and shared with others.

This year, I was lucky enough to experience the traveling exhibition “Julia Child: A Recipe for Life”. As well as the permanent exhibit of Julia’s original home kitchen from Cambridge, Massachusetts, at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. First, I visited the permanent exhibit at the Smithsonian and absolutely loved it; however, I was left wanting more. I was standing at the exhibit, pressing up against the glass, trying to get the best look inside that I could. I wanted to experience more of Julia Child, the kitchen, and her life. The “Julia Child: A Recipe for Life” traveling exhibit did just that. It gave me more of Julia Child, her history, her story, and all in a fun, interactive way.

Few culinary figures have shaped American cooking the way Julia Child did. With her talent, humor, and unmistakable voice, she introduced generations of home cooks to French cuisine and transformed the way we think about food.
