Butter & Crumble

Butter and Crumble’s Monthly Rotating Innovational Menu of Savory and Sweet Pastries

If you’ve spent any time on Instagram lately, chances are you’ve seen the beautifully layered croissants and inventive pastries coming out of Butter & Crumble. Butter and Crumble is one of San Francisco’s most talked-about bakeries right now.

Tucked into the heart of North Beach, this small but mighty bakery has built a cult following thanks to its ever-changing menu, original flavors, and unmistakable, perfectly pink aesthetic.

Location & Hours for Butter and Crumble

  • Address: 271 Francisco St., San Francisco, CA
  • Open: Thursday – Sunday
  • Hours: 9:00 AM until sold out

And yes… they will sell out. Sell-out usually happens by 11 or 11:30, so get there early. Once Butter and Crumble opens, the line moves quickly. I recommend reading the current menu and having your order ready. As well as an alternative order in mind in case something you wanted sells out.

The Line (What to Expect)

The line at Butter and Crumble is not a casual“pop in and grab a pastry” situation.

When I visited, I arrived at 6:45 AM, and there were already eight people in line ahead of me. After a few minutes of standing in line, I went up to look in the windows and take pictures. My sister held my spot in line, and I got to see inside the bakery with no one in it! (A rare sight, because as soon as it opens, it is packed.)

  • People start lining up as early as 2 hours before opening.
  • The line gets so long that they have hired a line coordinator
  • Most days, they sell out by around 11:30 AM (sometimes earlier, sometimes closer to 2 PM)

If you want the best selection, plan for an early morning.

Butter & Crumble does offer a limited pre-order system—but they are not easy to get.

  • Drops Tuesday between 9 AM – 12 PM
  • Only available as set boxes (small & large)
  • Extremely limited and very hard to secure

Even with pre-orders, this bakery remains highly competitive.

A few things that stood out:

  • The pastries are unlike anything you’ve had before
  • The branding is thoughtful and highly aesthetic
  • The merch is so good (I couldn’t resist the pink croissant hat)
  • Their mugs are handmade pottery by a local San Francisco artist

It’s the kind of place where everything feels intentional—from the flavors to the packaging.

Is It Worth It?

Short answer: yes. Between the rotating menu, the creativity, the savory pastry options, and the quality, Butter & Crumble absolutely lives up to the hype.

Just be prepared to go early, be patient, and don’t expect a quick stop.

Final Thoughts

If you love pastries, this is one of those places you have to experience at least once. And if you’re anything like me… you’ll already be planning your next visit before you even leave.

I feel like Butter and Crumble have cracked the code, and other bakeries should take note. We want more savory options! Sweets can be overwhelming, and you can only eat sweets in moderation. Having the savory pastries to balance out the sweet is key here.

I love the staff, the story, and the execution of Butter and Crumble. The details, like the tile floor when you walk in, are so fun. I love all the merch, the pastry box packaging, I love it all. It lives up to the hype and is so worth the wait in line.

How I justify the wait time:

I go to Disney (Land and World) often, waiting two hours for Butter and Crumble seems totally doable for me. Take a coffee, scroll through your phone, or chat with someone in line, and the time passes quickly.

I do, however, go on non-hard rain days. I am a native Coastal Northern Californian, so rain doesn’t really bother me, but I do steer clear of the big storms. For example, in February, the weather can get pretty bad. There was even a power outage in SF (February 2026) from a severe storm. (I was driving into the city that day but waited it out in Yountville; by the next day, the power was back on.) I advise checking the weather if you are traveling into the city for Butter and Crumble. With that said, summer can be cold and wet as well. Last July (2025) was cold, windy, and rainy, but this March (2026) it was in the 80s.
